It was a party of five for May’s outing, the Ladies making the trip to downtown LA’s Bottega Louie. Is it Italian? Is it French? Is it fusion, seeking its own identity? “We like to think of our place as New American,” said our server. Call it what you want – the Ladies like to think of it as wonderfully satisfying; a savory and enjoyable experience. Yes, we really liked it.
The evening began with a congested drive up the 710 and a depressing detour that took us through Skid Row, which made the Ladies think about how these LWD outings might be used for more than just thrilling our taste buds (like perhaps donating our time, our money to a local mission; or collecting canned goods and dropping them off each month before an outing – what do you think, Ladies?).
Once there, we hardly had time to snap a couple of Instagram pics of the colorful display of macarons when we were seated by the beauteous wait staff.
First up was wine. We chose the Malbec Reserve Tamari Mendoza, a robust and woodsy red that put the Ladies in a good mood.
Then came the bread and a couple of appetizers – bruschetta and the Brussels sprouts & pistachios. The tomatoes on the bruschetta were zesty, yummy, and the sprouts had a hearty flavor, although none of the Ladies seemed able to find a pistachio. This didn’t worry them too much as they looked forward to their entrees, not wanting to overdo it early on so there’d be plenty of room for dessert.
The Ladies all seemed to have a hankering for pasta, and all seemed to be purely delighted with their choices. The sauces and broths proved rich and flavorful; the shrimp in my dish were perfectly cooked, and my broccolini buttery and toothsome.
Even with our plates cleaned, we’d be damned if we didn’t leave without something sweet. Though the souffle takes 20-25 minutes to prepared (be sure to order during your main course if you’re interested), we’d been envious of a few too many of our neighbors’ orders to pass it up. It was All That & a Bag of Chocolate Chips, fluffy and succulent and creamy – like a toasted ramekin of pudding. Yes, very delicious. As were the other desserts we shared. My personal favorite was the affogato, served with an espresso macaron – full bodied like chicory and sweet.
So did we enjoy ourselves at Bottega Louie? Si. Oui. Heck ya. And one of these days, the Ladies will return for brunch. We’ll tell you how it goes.
