I’m sooooo excited for the Super Bowl. Not because my favorite team is playing (do I even have one?). And not because I’m getting up before the bulging crack of day to run my fourth consecutive Surf City Half Marathon. No. The reason I’ll be darn pleased for the next two weeks to fly by is so I can enjoy the (drumroll, por favor) grand opening of Steelcraft, the LBC’s hottest new hot spot for food, cold beer, and outdoor communal chillin’ like a villain.
While that opening will be grand, Steelcraft has already embarked on one that’s soft, with several of its container-housed vendors already open. My kiddos and I sampled three of these places today (over two visits). Actually, that’s a lie. The children ate. I simply smelled and admired (and salivated over) their dishes. You see, it’s Daniel Fast/Consecration time at my church (I’ve discussed in years past here and here), which means no booze, no cheese, no chicken for booze-cheese-chicken-loving me for four more days, when the fast ends (and probably a few more days after that since I’m getting two wisdom teeth pulled the day the fast breaks – worst timing ever). But at least I got to see the joy and delight on their faces as they took on a glass of sour beer (the older kid is legal) from Smog City Brewing, bacon-laced cheeseburgers from Pig Pen Delicacy, and toasty, whipped cream-topped Belgian liege waffles from Waffle Love.
It’s fine. I’m saving myself for the Grand Opening anyway. Really, I am. If I can do the 21-day fast, surely I can make it another two weeks to celebrate in a hard way.
Who am I kidding – I’ll be in line for a waffle and a sour beer as soon as the painkillers wear off and I can take in food and drink without it dribbling down my chin. And still, I’ll surely see you at the corner of Long Beach Blvd. and Bixby for Steelcraft’s Grand Opening from February 3-6!

Post Script
So, ya. I took the deep Steelcraf plunge right after finishing my half marathon (by the way, these races are better when you train), meeting the kids for some post-race, pre-game indulgence. And beer – sour beer. And beef! (I tried to order a veggie burger, but Pig Pen Delicacy had run out of them for the day – the universe wanted me to have a little meat.) I have to say that the burger Pig Pen hooked up did a good job enticing me to eat more beef in the future. Soon. Real soon. And all of the other container vendors are up and cooking/brewing/ice shaving/baking for Long Beach-ians and others. And I’m here and willing to help any takers looking to dine at Steelcraft with a little company this spring! 🙂
Dang glad you’re back. Loved the review of various places from two days ago. Looking forward to more more more, how do you like it, how do you like more more more!! j
