It was an evening of bad pics and good food in Culver City for me and my date (Mr. Dianderthal) at Café Vida. Not only did we dine after dusk (bad lighting) but I didn’t have my fancy DLSR camera (used my iPhone 7 – which at least helped me tell a decent IG story) so the evidence of a great meal is rather lacking. The photos aren’t awful (there have been worse). Still, I had to start with that disclaimer (are you wondering if I’m going to squeeze a parenthetical into every sentence? You’ll have to see…).
I knew the food wouldn’t disappoint once I learned the chef was longtime family friend Dawn Davis, switching up her soul food roots (she can put her foot in a peach cobbler) to work it out with a little Latin cuisine. I had a hard choice between the fish tacos and the jalapeño turkey burger (turns out, I was feeling a little burger-y). The husband tried to keep it healthy (even though we started with a chef-sponsored chips and guac appie), ordering the turkey meatloaf with veggies. (Oh, and then he took on a colossal slice of carrot cake all by himself). And certainly, there were drinks (duh!). Wine and the Vida margarita (good, but included something mismatched, though I can’t recall what at the moment – nothing that kept me from drinking it).
So Café Vida kept its promise of serving up well-balanced and flavorful food fit for a fabulous night out – no parenthetical needed.
(The not quite awful photos.)
